What I Write

Fiction that Hurts so Good

Ever read a book where the heroes mightily bound through all obstacles without so much as a scratch? You won’t find that here. I love stories where success is hard-won through effort, suffering, and sacrifice. Where no one walks away untouched. Bittersweet, uplifting stories where choices have consequences the characters must own.

Where the Epic is Personal

As above, so below. How often in life must we discover and call upon our inner strength to overcome external challenges? One of the things I love most about stories is that they provide an arena of the imagination. A place where the battles within hearts and minds have sweeping, worlds-shaking analogues. Where the fate of everything rides on the characters’ ability to achieve their truest selves.

Fallible, Complex Characters

Understanding comes from wrestling an apparent contradiction into paradox, so why should characters get away with anything less? Whether they know it or not, they have their biases and hypocrisies, telling their own little lies of comfort. It’s tremendously satisfying to see them stop short when those lies are brought into stark relief, forcing them to grow or die.
